Our guide Alan did an amazing job with our group of 10 (including my family of 4). July 21, 2022We took this tour with Harold, our guide, and it was really excellent! It was our last tour in a 3 week visit to Costa Rica - in fact our... read more 17th guided tour - and it was the best! Harold is obviously a very skilled wildlife expert, but also has very good people skills; he listened to our previous experiences, and honed his tour to our needs and interests.
He adeptly got us through the bureaucracy of admission to the park, and led us on a fascinating walk through the park.
It was a Sunday, and the park is very popular, but there are daily entry quotas, and we did not feel at all overwhelmed by the other visitors; Harold often led us to quieter spots where he had spotted something we would find interesting.
We saw many Capuchins, and heard about the problems that feeding wildlife produces and the reasons it is forbidden. Harold found a wonderful mother and baby sloth for us, and deftly set up his viewing telescope, which gave great close-up views and prompted fascinating discussion about the ecosystem in sloth fur, and their behaviour. Harold also showed us 2 ground-resting nightjars, an amazing feat of pattern recognition to spot these highly camouflaged birds.
The tour included collection and return from our hotel, and a refreshing stop for fresh fruit and cold drinks on exit from the park.
Our visit was definitely a highlight of our stay, and we thoroughly recommend this tour.

Justin, one of the the owner/organizers, stated that it might rain if we wanted to change any plans...but we decided to go head-on rain or shine.
I was good to go, with a little rain, but in the back of my mind I was a little worried about the rest of the group getting too wet and being uncomfortable. When we arrived at the farm we endured a little sprinkle but as we hit the trail in the Loddres area, then it started with a pretty good downpour. Let me tell you...5 minutes into the rainy trail ride turn into an absolutely majestic morning!!! I am so glad we opted to ride in the rain because it was an absolutely amazing day!!! We stopped at a great little waterfall and dismounted for some photos and to stretch our legs. When we returned to the farm the rain was back to just a little sprinkle. As we shed some of our wet attire a private cook prepared a Costa Rica Family lunch for the group, called Casado. Everyone was very pleasant and accommodating throughout the day. We ate our lunch, rested a little bit, and chatted and took pictures around the farm before the shuttle ride back to the hotel.

After a beautiful 2-1/2 hour row over and back over a small bay, my lower legs were deep-fried--a rookie mistake I will not make again.
I would have appreciated more help fitting the life vest that kept riding up and interfering with the snorkel. I abandoned the struggle and just swam. My friends were more successful and saw a few sea creatures though the water was murky that morning. They had hoped to receive more information from our guide about the local terrestrial wildlife. I would have appreciated any pointers on rowing a 2-person kayak, but we got the job done. Included luncheon at Los Tucanes restaurant after was very fresh (fish) and tasty. The restaurant has a bar, changing rooms with showers and a small sundries shop.
