We had a blast Water Rafting with Nico and the other tour guides! The description of the tour was exactly what we got. We stayed in Jaco, which was a... read more hour 1/2 away from the river, however, transportation was included. I was told we would be picked up from our hotel at 7am, the driver was outside to get us at 6:50am! Once we arrived at the facility, we were served breakfast, coffee and juice (the juice was fresh and tasted amazing). We were then transported to the river which took about 20 minutes. The ride to the river was pure entertainment! Once we reached the river the guides gave us a very thorough lesson on the commands we should know during the ride. The river was amazing, the rapids were awesome and the tour guides were even better. After the river, we were transported back to the facility and was served lunch which also included and then dropped back off to our hotel. If you are looking for a good rafting trip, I highly recommend this company. We had so much fun I only wished the river was longer!
February 1, 2022WOW! 6 of us (all over 60) took this 3 hour tour and were absolutely delighted with everything. Our Guide, Alan C, was SUPER knowledgeable, pleasant, funny and diligent to... read more ensure our comfort, safety and that we saw as much as possible. He is a wealth of knowledge. The boat driver (and his eagle-eyed son) spotted 22 different species of birds, plus others including a three toed sloth cradling a baby, an armadillo, various iguana's , tiger crab, fish, baby crocodile and others. Alan was a wealth of information. Lunch was included on our tour at the restaurant, which was excellent! Looking foward to our national park walking tour tomorrow - hopefully with our same guide!. Highly recommend this company. Courteous, professional, clean facilities (immaculate bathrooms!), what a pleasure.
February 26, 2022Danny, our guide, was a very good tour guide, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about animals and plants. He clearly loves his work, and greatly enhanced our tour. I would definitely... read more recommend a tour with him.
Easy walking, hot, so take water, but there are numerous places to refill on the trail. The tour visits a beautiful beach for a refreshing break.
We saw numerous monkeys and sloths, plus a number of other smaller mammals and reptiles.
February 10, 2022All of the activities organized by Toucanes were a hit (especially ziplining!) We loved our guides — Danny, Carla and especially the whitewater rafting guides Orlando, Nicholas... read more and Christian. The river was the real - deal -- we brought kids 9 and up. The zipline guides were great with our family. A guide can really make or break an experience so thank you for making sure we were taken care of.
December 1, 2021Oh my gosh this was fun. Our guide was wonderful Danny and Rebecca. They shared so much history showed us a sloth on the way to our adventure. The chef... read more was fantastic and the green plantain ceviche out of this world. A relaxing and lovely afternoon

December 1, 2021We had a great day on the river with these guides. They picked us up right on time, took us to the river in an open 4-wheel drive truck. They... read more set us up with helmets, life jackets and paddles and gave us instructions how to float the river without falling out. The park was beautiful and we saw so many animals from sloths, monkeys, iguanas, deer, etc. Ir was really cool to see them in their natural habitat. I really enjoyed everything about this tour!
April 5, 2022I've rafted the Gauley and New River in West Virginia, among others. This trip on the Savegre was at least as fun and still safe for our pre-teen son and... read more his cousins. They all said this was their favorite excursion ever in Costa Rica, and I don't blame them. We drove to the Tucanes Tours HQ outside Quepos on the morning of our trip and met our friendly bus driver, Super Mario. The bus has a roof onto which they strap the boats, but is open on the sides (with proper railings). We headed down the highway a little way, then turned on a road to head upstream next to the Savegre. Along the way, we stopped at a primary school. Costa Ricans are (and should be) proud that they have an excellent education system. We drove through little villages going up into the mountains. Orlando harvested a cacao fruit off a tree and we got to taste the berries. They pointed out hawks by the roadside and teak plantations. Honestly, the drive upriver in the bus was pretty and informative and almost worth the fee itself. Then we got to the river and the staff got the boats down and fitted us to gear. They use good equipment--almost exclusively NRS, I noticed. We were impressed that there would be a safety kayaker in addition to a guide in each raft. An additional kayaker went on the trip, but his job was to paddle ahead and set up to take photos. Any gear that you don't want to take on the river with you, you leave in the cab of Mario's bus. All he does after dropping you off is head down to the takeout spot downriver, so it's safe with him. The kids were a little scared when we first got on the river, but our guide Nico had us all practice taking strokes and getting down on the floor of the raft. I've had good and bad whitewater rafting guides. A good one shouldn't make you do all that much paddling to correct course, and you can tell when you've charted the intended course through the rapids. Nico was very good, but all the while making it fun. I think he played it a little safe with us, having us get down in the floor of the boat pretty often, but I think that was the right move with three boys aged 9-11 in the boat. We hit the standing waves, all got soaked, and were all smiles the whole time. The Savegre is just beautiful. Crystal clear water, beautiful nature on either side of the river, and some interesting twists and turns in the river. Plenty of deep pools in which to swim between rapids. At one point, we pulled over to the side and hiked a short way to a beautiful waterfall. We got some family pictures taken there and let the water run over our helmeted heads. When we pulled out at the takeout spot, Super Mario the bus driver had already set up a fruit buffet of yummy watermelon and pineapple, water and tea. Then he just started grabbing nearby plants and showing the kids how they could slap this fern on their skin and make a temporary spore tattoo, touch this plant and the leaf closes up in reaction, and scratch this bark because it's cinnamon. We were all tired but elated from the rafting trip, so it was a quieter ride back to Tucanes Tours HQ, but when we got there, we were offered use of the big, clean bathrooms (with showers and changing rooms) and then sat down for a really excellent typical casado meal. Often, tour operators who include lunch with your tour have a captive audience and don't need to serve excellent food, but all of us really enjoyed our lunches. The photographer came by with an iPad to show us some of the photos. If you want to purchase, you pay a flat fee for all the pictures of your group. I *think* it was $40 for our group of 7. We have found that experiences are more valuable in the long run than material toys, and photos often help us remember and be grateful for the experiences, so we bought the photos. I'm including some in this review. As you can see, the photographer did an excellent job. They emailed me a link later to download the photos. COVID: All the guides got on the bus wearing face masks. We asked if we had to wear them, and they said it was up to us. Since we had all been vaccinated and were riding open air, we elected to take ours off, and only then did the guides. We put our masks back on to walk through the restaurant (as is usual these days in CR), but felt comfortable taking them off to eat since the Tucanes Tours restaurant is, like most in CR, open air. We were impressed with everything about this trip: the river, the rapids, the guides, the safety equipment and protocols of Tucanes Tours, the drive, the snack, the lunch, and the photos.
